ÖgeAssessment of spatio-temporal variations in lake surface using landsat imageries and Google Earth Engine(Graduate School, 2022-06-22) Albarqouni, Mohammed M. Y. ; Balçık, Filiz Bektaş ; 501191628 ; Geomatics EngineeringThe purpose of this research is to determine the lake's water surface area and the Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT), as well as to give a long-term analysis of the spatial and temporal relationships between these variables. Lake Burdur, Lake Egirdir, and Lake Beysehir were the three lakes in Türkiye's Lakes Region that were taken into consideration to be used as testing sites. Lakes are crucial to the ecosystem and ecological stability. For the preservation and development of such sensitive regions, continual monitoring using accurate and dependable sources is required. The development of remote sensing technology provides a significant opportunity for the determination, monitoring, and assessment of the current state of lakes. Specifically, the improvement of satellite images spatial and spectral resolutions contributes to this potential. Mapping water surface area is essential for agriculture, economic, and the structure and function of the ecosystem, as well as for the extent of lakes' water surfaces. Remote sensing methods were used to comprehend the long-term variations in the water surface area of Lake Burdur, Egirdir, and Beysehir. Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based platform that applies operations to Landsat satellite images, was used to perform the analysis. In the study, two satellite sensors; Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI/ TIRS, were employed to cover as much of the research period from 2000 to 2021 as possible. Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS gives coverage from 2013 through 2021, while Landsat 5 TM provides coverage from 2000 to 2011. There was no available satellite data for 2012. Also, ERA5-Land and TerraClimate monthly satellite dataset were used in this study to show whether there is correlation between water surface area and LSWT with meteorological parameters (temperature, evaporation and precipitation). The first chapter discusses the relevance of lakes to the ecosystem and global climate, as well as the information on water body extraction using satellite images acquired by remote sensing was presented. This chapter also discusses the study's scope and objectives. The second chapter presents the role of remote sensing and satellite data in extracting and monitoring the spatio-temporal changes of water surfaces. The third chapter introduces the study area and clarified all of its features, in addition to providing the satellite data utilized in the analysis. Thus, a total of 606 Landsat images were collected and analyzed through GEE cloud platform. In the fourth chapter, the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) was utilized to extract the water pixels in order to determine the surface water extent from the image inventory. Thus, the procedure of calculating surface water area and LSWT has been explained in detail via the used equations and GEE code. The accuracy assessment for the largest and smallest surface water area for each lake was evaluated using the random point selection method and confusion matrix. Moreover, the water surface area changes of the three lakes and the LSWT variable, as well as their relationship with one to another, were analyzed to clarify the effects of an increase or decrease in LSWT over the extent of the lake's surface water. In the fifth chapter, the daily, seasonal, and annual variations in each lake surface area across the research period were presented. The findings from the study indicate that by using NDWI, water pixels can be extracted rather accurately, with an overall accuracy of more than 98% for the surface area of all lakes. Between 2000 and 2021, the water surface area value of Lake Burdur decreased significantly by more than 22%, while for Lake Egirdir it has dropped slightly by less than 4%, and for Lake Beysehir has not changed noticeably, it has decreased by roughly less than 1%. After analyzing the LSWT values, it can be established that they increased in all lakes except for Beysehir over the study time period. Thus, Burdur Lake's LSWT increased by more than 2.1°C, Egirdir Lake heightened by more than 0.3°C, and Beysehir Lake decreased by more than 1.4°C. The obtained results were evaluated with meteorological parameters and our findings showed that human-induced activities were more dominant than climate effects over the lakes. In the sixth chapter, the study's findings were reviewed and discussed.

ÖgeBüyükçekmece havzası kentsel saçaklanma eğilimlerinin İstanbul üst ölçek plan kararları çerçevesinde incelenmesi(Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, 2023-01-31) Bal, Gökçen ; Göksel, Çiğdem ; 706181011 ; Coğrafi Bilgi TeknolojileriKentleşme sürecinin son 30 yılında nüfusunu üç kata yakın arttıran İstanbul yurt genelinde gerek yaşam standartlarının yüksekliği gerekse ekonomik sebeplerle yurt içi göçlerin liste başı olmuştur.

ÖgeDam break induced flood analysis by soft computing techniques(Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, 2022-06-03) Akdemir, Halid ; Bayındır, Cihan ; 501201513 ; Hydraulics and Water Resources EngineeringWater structures have been one of the basic components that have served the various needs of societies since ancient times. Fresh water resources, which are examples of these structures and have a great impact on the residents in vicinity, are dams. Dams have a variety of purposes such as fresh water supply, waste storage, agricultural irrigation, electricity generation and flood protection. The management of massive structures such as dams is also a critical issue affecting the well-being of societies. The proper management of dams is important not only for the efficient, but also for the safe operation of the water resource. Otherwise, the dams can collapse, as in many examples in the past, causing enormous material and moral damages and losses. The failure of dams can be caused not only by their proper operation, but also by many various reasons such as earthquakes, extreme precipitations, sabotage and aging. Since dams hold large bodies of water, they cause many life losses and material damage in case of their collapse. History has shown this to humanity in a painful way. It is essential that the dams are properly designed and operated in order to prevent them from collapsing. Since these structures are man-made, they can still be demolished, so preparations for this scenario should be done and ready within the scope of risk and disaster management. It is a clear reason that dam operations will become more difficult in rapidly changing climatic conditions. The aging of dams in the coming years is an additional problem to these difficulties. These reasons assurance that dam failure problems will be a hot topic to work on in the years to come. Unfortunately, dam failure problems are inherently complex. The cause of dam failures may not be known because they are very large engineering structures. There can be many different reasons behind a dam collapse. The dam failure process is also difficult to analyze as it involves many variables. Researchers have proposed many different methods and approaches to illuminate this process. As a result of dam failures, a tsunami wave may occur at the downstream, followed by flooding and rising water level over time. In recent years, problems with complex definition and many variables have been analyzed with soft computing methods. Soft computing methods are a very broad field that includes many algorithms and are frequently used in many different branches of science. Their success, especially in the analysis of major nature problems, has been proven by researchers with various studies. Grey relational analysis (GRA), long-short term memory (LSTM) and artificial neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), which are used in this study, can be given as example algorithms of soft computing methods. It has been intended to provide a data set to researchers and local governments and aimed to contribute to risk and disaster management in water resources by presenting numerical simulations of some large and aging dams in Turkey and the possible loss of life they will cause. In this context, GRA, LSTM and ANFIS models from soft computing methods were developed and tested for the analysis of dam failure problems and dam break induced flood. In summary, the main purpose of this study is to prove the usability of soft computing techniques in dam break problems and to conduct risk analysis of some aging dams in Turkey within this framework. In the third section titled "Danger level ranking of possible dam failures in Turkey", the 15 aging dams in Turkey which have potential to cause the most dangerous consequences in case of failure were selected intuitively from engineering judgement in order to perform their failure simulation. The selected 15 aging dams are as follows. Seyhan Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), Borçka Dam and HPP, Ürkmez Dam, Eğrekkaya Dam, Tahtalı Dam, Mamasın Dam, Dim Dam and HPP, Kurtboğazı Dam, Atasu Dam, Alibey Dam, Akköprü Dam and HPP, Suat Uğurlu Dam and HPP, Derbent Dam and HPP, Manavgat Dam and HPP, Kirazlıköprü Dam. The failure simulations of the dams were carried out with the worst-case scenario, the sudden collapse failure mode. The simulations performed were made through the HEC-RAS application and the simulation stages were shared step by step. Maximum water depth maps obtained according to the simulation were given for the impact zone of each dam. Using first wave arrival time and affected population values obtained from the simulastions, possible life losses were calculated with the equations of DeKay and Mclelland (1993) and Brown and Graham (1988) and shared for each dam. Accordingly, the collapse of Seyhan Dam and HPP causes the higest life losses among others. The 15 dams were ranked according to the probable loss of life obtained from the DeKay and Mclelland (1993) equation in case of their failure. The GRA model has been developed for the danger level ranking analysis of dams in order to be a more practical solution, since the danger level ranking of dams by numerical analysis is a labor-intensive task that takes a lot of time. The effective attributes of GRA model were chosen as follows. Surrounding population, distance from that population, elevation relative to that population and reservoir size. These selected attributes have been decided from an engineering point of view. The quantitative values of the attributes were determined by engineering evaluation. The output of the model is to rank the dams according to the possible loss of life that may occur in case of failure. According to results produced by the GRA model developed in this frame, the dam that can cause the highest life losses in case of collapse is Adana Dam and HPP. The rankings produced by the GRA model and by the numerical analysis were compared and interpreted. The results indicate that the GRA model and numerical analysis produce similar ordering. Thus, it has been revealed that the GRA method is an effective and useful tool and can produce practical solutions for risk and disaster management studies on water structures. In addition, simulations of failure of 15 aging dams in Turkey and their possible consequences were brought to the literature. The implications of this section will contribute to the risk and disaster management in water structures. In the fourth section titled "Prediction of dam break induced flood parameters by LSTM network and ANFIS", the analysis of the most vital parameters that determine the lethality level of flood disasters caused by dam failure was carried out with LSTM and ANFIS from soft computing methods. Past events don't provide a very adequate data set, as well as experimental studies also remain very fictional. In real situations, every flood event is unique, which has different forces that drive and effect damage level. Therefore, it is necessary to examine such flood events on a case-by-case basis and to carry out special studies for each region. Performing flood simulations of regions with numerical analysis is the most satisfactory method currently available. Data obtained from simulations of sample regions by numerical analysis were selected for feeding and testing LSTM and ANFIS models developed under this title. The main parameters affecting the lethality level of the flood are water depth, flow velocity, wave damping and first wave arrival time. The data set of these parameters was created by simulating the Alibey Dam break and Froehlich (2008) approach from the breach development methods accepted in the literature defined in the HEC-RAS application was chosen as its breach development method. The information about the measurement locations determined in the impact area of Alibey Dam and the data obtained from these points were given in the relevant section. Since flood parameters such as water depth, flow velocity and wave damping are data sets consisting of time and location series, it was preferred to create LSTM models in the analysis of these parameters. On other hand, ANFIS model was found more convenient for the analysis of the first wave arrival time because it was deemed more appropriate to create a multivariate model. Due to the suitability of the data sets of water depth, flow velocity and wave damping, nonlinear autoregressive LSTM models containing the same following structure were created for the analysis of water depth, flow velocity and wave damping parameters, which does not need any external input and takes the previous output as input. The training, validation and testing ratios were chosen as 20%, 5% and 75%, respectively. The training function was selected as bayesian regularization backpropagation and the dataset dividing function was designed as divedeblock so called considering it is prominent to test the last part of the data. In this case, the last 75% of the data set was exposed testing. Coefficient of correlation and root mean squared error values expressing the success of the LSTM models developed for the analysis of water depth in the rezervoir, water depth in downstream, flow velocity and wave damping parameters in the test phase are 0.9988 and 0.5798, 1.0000 and 0.0192, 0.9995 and 0.0018, 0.9986 and 0.1804, respectively. The inputs of the ANFIS model predictor of first wave arrival time were selected as pool elevation at failure, final breach bottom elevation and distance from the dam. The training/testing ratio was determined as 75/25%. The dataset contains 140 samples which was divided as 105 samples for training phase and 35 samples for testing phase. Coefficient of correlation and root mean squared error values expressing the success of the ANFIS model developed for the analysis of first wave arrival time parameter in the test phase are 0.9828 and 3.6216, respectively. The statistical parameters prove that the analysis success of the models are robust. The success of soft computing methods in the analysis of dam failure problem has been shown to be a useful tool in the management of real disaster events. To put it more clearly, some applications that contain algorithms working in real time can be established for such possible disasters. These applications can reduce the extent of the disaster by using them as practical solution tools in such disaster times. It is possible to learn the failure mode of any dam and the mechanism of breach development as soon as the event occurs. However, this is too late for any flood parameters to be analysed. In such events, there are only minutes for the right actions to be taken. For example, when the Manavgat Dam collapses for some reason, how long the first wave will arrive at any location is important for evacuation, or knowing the possible maximum water elavation at any point means the elevation at which people must climb. In such limited times, it takes time to perform numerical analysis according to the emerging flood hydrograph, but algorithms trained before the event according to various scenarios can provide practical solutions at the time of the event and provide information to the relevant people.

ÖgeDifferential tectonics of Aydın Range in western Anatolia Extensional Province: Inferences from catchment-wide erosion, river incision, and range-front deposition(Graduate School, 2023-10-27) Özpolat, Emrah ; Yıldırım, Cengiz ; Görüm, Tolga ; 602162001 ; GeodynamicsThe western Anatolian Extensional Province is a rapidly extending region characterized by dynamic landscapes resulting from the ongoing deformation of the Earth's crust. The Aydın Range, located along the northern margin of the Büyük Menderes Graben, is a major horst within the western Anatolian Extensional Province. This region has experienced a series of extensional events since the Late Oligocene, leading to ongoing uplift and erosion, shaping a complex landscape of mountains, valleys, and river systems. The tectonic deformation within the Aydın Range has not been uniform, resulting in differential uplift along the range and variations in erosion rates. This differential uplift has shaped the landscape, giving rise to distinctive erosional and depositional landforms along the northern margin of the Büyük Menderes Graben. The morphostratigraphy and morphology of these landforms provide valuable insights into the source-to-sink relationships and the Quaternary tectonics of the region. The active tectonic regime and steep topography of the Aydın Range create favorable conditions for enhanced erosion rates, leading to the development of the distinctive range-front deposition. However, the understanding of the active tectonics of the Aydın Range and its relationship to catchment erosion, river incision, and range-front deposition remains limited. To understand the differential tectonic uplift pattern of the Aydın Range, this thesis focuses on erosional and depositional features along the southern flank of the Aydın Range. The main objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to unravel the interplay between differential rock uplift dynamics of the Aydın Range and the range-front depositional and erosional patterns within the range, considering the tectonic activity, lithology, and varying erosion rates across the region. The study area offers favorable conditions for analysis, including numerous alluvial fans aligned along a segmented normal fault, similar climatic and vegetative characteristics within catchments, and a mixture of granite and gneiss lithologies. A comprehensive approach combining catchment-wide erosion analysis, river incision analysis, river longitudinal profile analysis, and range-front deposition analysis is employed. Catchment-wide erosion patterns, based on 10Be cosmogenic nuclides are examined to understand the relative contributions of various factors on erosional dynamics and decipher the tectonic uplift pattern of the range. River incision processes and channel characteristics are investigated to gain insights into underlying tectonic processes and their spatial variations. Furthermore, the morphology of alluvial fans at the range front are studied to evaluate tectonic uplift and the relative contributions of different processes to sedimentation patterns. Higher catchment-wide erosion rates and higher river incision rates in Section 3 and Section 5 of the Aydın Range are shown by the results. In addition, higher channel steepness index values and slope break knickpoint distributions imply that a higher rock uplift rate is responsible for thicker alluvial fans in sections 3 and 5. In contrast, Section 1, section 2, and Section 4 have lower catchment-wide erosion rates and lower river incision rates. In addition, the lower ksn and absence of slope break knickpoints in these sections is an indication that these sections have lower tectonic rock uplift. This resulted in the less thick and spatially larger distribution of alluvial fans in Section 1, section 2, and Section 5. A comprehensive understanding of the differential tectonics and range-front deposition processes is provided by the source-to-sink approach employed in this thesis, enhancing knowledge of the active tectonics and surface processes in the region. Additionally, the detailed morphostratigraphy of Quaternary landforms in the study area provides valuable insights into landscape evolution and hazard assessment in this dynamic setting. The map of Quaternary landforms fills the existing gaps in the region-wide correlations and maps associated with the Quaternary geology and geomorphology, facilitating a more comprehensive understanding of the tectonic processes shaping the Aydın Range.

ÖgeDistribution of radionuclides in Arıklı region (Çanakkale/Ayvacık) and possible causes(Graduate School, 2022-06-28) Top, Gülcan ; Tutay Örgün, Yüksel ; Karahan, Gürsel ; 601112002 ; Earth System ScienceThe aim of this thesis is to determine the indoor and outdoor gamma dose rates in Arıklı (Çanakkale/Ayvacık/Turkey) uranium mineralization region, to determine the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K in selected samples (building materials, rocks, surface soils, beach sands and soil samples collected from excavation ditches), to map the outdoor gamma dose rates and the activity concentrations of the radionuclides specified in the surface soils using geographic information systems, to identify the geological sources that cause high doses and to evaluate the possible health risks for the region based on all these measurement results. The measurement of mass concentrations for U, Th on some selected samples is also included into the study. This study is the first comprehensive study for the region. For this thesis, the Arıklı region was considered as a research area due to the presence of a uranium mineralization zone and the prevalence of felsic volcanic rocks containing above-average uranium, thorium and potassium concentrations. In order to determine the level of radioactivity in the Arıklı uranium mineralization region, preliminary field studies were started in 2015 measuring the outdoor gamma dose taking into account the geological formations. It has been determined that anomalies are especially concentrated in and around the drilling points determined by the General Directorate of Mineral Researches (MTA) to search for uranium.

ÖgeDrone wars 3D: an interactive simulator for drone swarms(Graduate School, 2023) Karadeniz, Gökhan ; İnce, Gökhan ; 779468 ; Oyun ve Etkileşim Teknolojileri Ana Bilim DalıThe utilization of drone swarms, characterized by their formidable destructive capabilities and broad range of potential applications, has led to the pressing need for effective countermeasures to mitigate their potential threats. Additionally, the relatively low cost of drones has further amplified the need for robust defense strategies. Although consumer-type drones can be neutralized by electronic countermeasures or microwave weapons, military-grade drones are produced to be protected against such attacks, leaving the physical destruction as the best choice. Within the scope of this study, a simulation environment was developed in the Unity3D game engine in order to measure the effectiveness of defense systems against drone swarms and to find effective defense tactics and swarm formations. Unless otherwise stated, swarms with the same default values were used in the tests. The actor types in the simulation were 1) drone, 2) drone swarm, 3) machine gun, 4) laser weapon, 5) anti-aircraft gun, 6) air defense missile launcher. In the tests of defensive drone swarms against offensive drone swarms, two enemy swarms (identical in everything but their formations) were created. Then attack drones destroyed were inspected by applying all possible formation combinations. Results show that, the drone swarms have an average success rate of over 90% in destroying enemy drone swarms. Though, in order to achieve this success rate, the defending swarm must be located on the attacking swarm's target approach path. Another noteworthy finding was that each formation was most effective in defending against the enemy swarm having the same formation of attacking party. A strategy to copycat the offensive swarm's shape when possible seems to be viable given the fact that identical swarms are more effective against each other. This finding was also supported by the results of drone spacing tests. When two swarms of the same number and formation were used against each other with different drone spacing, the most effective defense was obtained when the drone spacing of the two swarms were equal.

ÖgeEcological niche modeling of Myotis davidii(Graduate School, 2022-06-09) Aksakal, Emre Can ; Çoraman, Emrah ; 601181012 ; Earth System ScienceMyotis davidii is a whiskered bat species distributed in large areas of the Western Palaearctic. It has a cryptic sister species, Myotis mystacinus, which also has a similar distribution range in Europe and western Asia. The distribution of M. davidii extends from the Balkans to the Far East Asia, whereas M. mystacinus is found in Europe, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. They have a sympatric range in an area extending from the Balkans to the Transcaucasia via Anatolia. In this sympatric area, the populations of M. davidii had discordant patterns of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, indicating that there were gene exchange between these species in the past. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of the past climatic conditions on the evolutionary history of M. davidii and its cryptic sister species, M. mystacinus. The particular aims of this thesis are: 1) to construct the bioclimatic niches of M. davidii and M. mystacinus; 2) to identify their putative refugial areas during the last glacial period; and 3) to assess their responses to current climate change. In order to investigate these aims, ecological niche models were utilized. Ecological niche models aims to predict the distribution range of species by matching the environmental factors with species occurence points. Ecological niche modeling approach has become a common and practical application in conservation and biogeography study, especially with the advent of computer sciences and essential databases. In this study, ecological niche models are constructed by using the R programming language, as implemented in the BIOMOD2 package. A maximum entrophy appoach was used, which is a machine learning method developed for ecological niche modelling applications. The constructed models captured the current range of M. davidii but failed for M. mystacinus. For Myotis mystacinus, the lack of data from the Balkans and Anatolia was the likely reason for the unsuccessful model projections. The models for M. davidii suggest that inaccordance with the genetic lineages there might be to separate ecological units. Past projections suggest that Anatolia and the Balkans might have acted as refugial areas for both of the species during the Last Glacial Maximum. For M. davidii, the coastal regions of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions of Anatolia were likely refugial areas. These findings highlights the importance of Anatolia as a glacial refugium. Finally, the future projections suggested that there will major range shifts in the distribution of these species, especially for M. mystacinus moving towards norther Europe.

ÖgeEffects of blend morphology and layered silicates' localization on the mechanical, thermal and viscoelastic properties of multiphase biopolymeric systems(Graduate School, 2022-07-07) Kahraman, Yusuf ; Nofar, Mohammadreza ; 506142408 ; Metallurgical and Materials EngineeringIn today's world, petroleum-based polymers are extensively consumed in various applications but their wastes have turned to be a serious environmental concern and their incineration has expedited the global warming. These concerns have motivated the scientists and industries to develop biodegradable polymeric products with satisfactory properties. Polylactide (PLA) is an aliphatic polyester, which is derived from renewable agricultural crops such as cornstarch, sugar cane, cassava etc. Bio-based and biodegradable PLA possesses promising mechanical properties such as high elastic modulus and tensile strength as well as high transparency with good barrier properties. Therefore, PLA could be an attractive alternative to be used in commodity and engineering applications such as plastic utensils, films and packaging, construction and even automotive where petroleum based polymers are widely used. Aside all these advantages, PLA also have some disadvantages like low-melt strength and slow crystallization, which could have an adverse effect on its processability, formability, and foamability. Moreover, its brittleness, low impact strength and low-service temperature could also confine its usage in various applications. In order to improve these drawbacks, it is possible to blend PLA with various biopolymers and synthetic non-compostable thermoplastics. So far, it was shown that blending PLA with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that possesses high impact strength, biocompatibility and durability, is an effective way to improve the toughness and melt properties of PLA. However, PLA and TPU are not compatible polymers and hence the formed blends would be fully immiscble without having a strong interfacial interaction at the interface of PLA and TPU phases. On the other hand, during the melt mixing of a PLA-based blend with TPU as the minor phase, which forms droplet morphology within the PLA matrix, in the competition between the droplet breakup and coalescence of the TPU minor phase, due to their incompatibility the droplet coalesence would be dominent and hence a coarse droplet morphology with poor interfacial adhesion is expected. All these would supresss the final desired properties of the blend. Consequently, it is crucial to improve the phase compatibility and to stabilize the morphology of the minor phase with finer droplet structure. It is know that chain extenders (CE) that are reactive with both polymers could act as compatibilizers by decreasing the interfacial tension between two phases which also refine the droplets and stabilize the morphology of the secondary phase. Among chain extenders, Joncryl has known to be an effective case for polyesters although it has not been properly investigated for PLA/TPU blends. On the other hand, the incorporation of nanoparticles in PLA blends and their interfacial localization could stabilize and refine the droplet morphology while they could also enhance the final strength and stiffness of the blend. In a polymer blend nanocomposite with droplet morphology, nanoparticles could localize at polymer phases or at the interface, and as noted the latter case prevents the coalescence of minor phase. Among nanoparticles, due to their lamellar structures and high aspect ratio, organoclays are inexpensive additives with high barrier properties. However the use of organoclays with PLA increases the degradation of PLA during melt processing, which deteriorates PLAs rheological properties. Therefore, the incorporation of CE together with organoclays is a convenient way to compensate the rheological properties of PLA. The main objective of this study is to improve the compatibility of PLA/TPU blend systems through using Joncryl in order to properly enhance the ductility, toughness, and impact strength of the brittle PLA matrix. Therefore, firstly, the effect of Joncryl CE incorporation on the properties of different PLA/TPU (75 wt.%/25 wt.%) blend systems was investigated. The blends were designed with either ether- or ester-based TPU grades (i.e., TPUether and TPUester) and with amorphous or semicrystalline PLA as the matrix material (i.e., aPLA and scPLA). It was observed that TPUester had a better compatibility with PLA and hence the mechanical properties of the blends with TPUester were improved more remarkably. The rheological results also showed that the CE had a better reactivity with PLA than with TPU grades. Among the TPUs, the CE also showed a better reactivity with TPUester than with TPUether. Therefore, while the PLA and TPUester possessed better compatibility, the CE addition further enhanced the interfacial compatibility of their blends. This dramatically caused the enhancements of the final morphological, rheological, and mechanical properties of their blends. Afterwards the composition of compatibilized PLA/TPU blends with Joncryl CE was optimized to obtain structure with high impact resistance and ductility. In order to determine the effect of composition ratio of PLA/TPU blends on the final properties, aPLA/TPUester blends were prepared with different blending ratios of 95 wt%/05 wt%, 85 wt.%/15 w.t%, 75 wt.%/25 wt.% and 65 wt.%/35 wt.% with incorporating 0.5 wt.% of CE. Joncryl CE provided remarkable decrease in TPU droplet sizes in all cases but toughness and strain at break increased profoundly at 75 wt.%/25 wt.% and 65 wt.%/35 wt% blending ratios. The 75 wt.%/25 wt.% blend was then melt mixed with changing CE amounts of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 wt.%. It was observed that incorporation of 0.5 wt% CE was optimum content to reach the highest toughness and strain at break values. Finally, scPLA/TPUester blends at weight ratio of 75 wt.%/25 wt.% compatibilized with fixed CE content of 0.5 wt.% were prepared with different loadings of Cloisite 30B (C30B) nanoclay (i.e., 1, 3, and 5 wt.%). PLA/TPU blends with C30B nanoclays were also prepared without compatibilizer for the sake of comparison. The effect of nanoclay content and the synergistic effect of nanoclay and CE on the resultant properties were then analyzed through morphological, rheological, thermomechanical, and mechanical analyses. In all cases it was observed that C30B localized at the interface between PLA and TPU phases as it was expected from thermodynamic calculations. Clay nanoparticles localized at the interface could act as a barrier in order to prevent droplet coalescence. Fine droplet morphology was achieved due to the interface localization of C30B.

ÖgeEstimating forest parameters using point cloud data(Graduate School, 2022-08-05) Arslan, Adil Enis ; Erten, Esra ; 501112601 ; Geomatics EngineeringThe spatial distributions and statistical properties of stand attributes must be understood in order to characterize the dynamic forest ecosystem. In this context dendrometry is an invaluable tool in forestry when quantitative characterisation of forests or individual trees are required. Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) and Tree Height (TH) are two significant parameters in dendrometry and heavily correlated with Leaf Area Index. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is described as a dimensionless parameter that has a significant impact in forestry applications and characterising the canopy's structural vegetation in general. With conventional methods, LAI can be calculated with destructive sample collection or with a relatively new non-destructive method called hemispherical photography. Conventional measurements of DBH and TH, although not destructive, are also very time and manpower consuming. With the engagement of modern surveying instruments in forestry, obtaining forest stand parameters for large areas in short time has recently become more prominent and possible with the use of LiDAR technology. Although promising, LiDAR data evaluation techniques for forest stand parameters calculation are still subject to development. This thesis work aims to make a comparative evaluation of existing novel techniques with newly proposed methods for estimating forest stand parameters, namely DBH, TH and LAI. For this purpose Point Cloud Data (PCD) from different sources such as Airborne LiDAR Systems (ALS), Terrestrial Laser Scan (TLS), and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) have been evaluated. These data sources have been chosen since they are greatly preferred for forestry operations, and their results can be quantitatively compared against the conventional method results. In-situ data was collected to assess LAI, DBH and TH estimations from PCD through varying sample locations including deciduous, coniferous, mixed forest type. Sampling zone spans from northern parts of Istanbul Urban forest area to a research forest under the supervision of Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, in Istanbul, Turkey. In-situ measurements were accepted as ground truth, and the results obtained from PCD evaluation were compared against them in terms of their overall error statistics, as well as their performances due to the computational cost and challenges in data acquisitions. The results obtained from the study show that segmentation and removal of wood materials from TLS based PCD by using neural network algorithms and connected component analysis methods, albeit, complex and computer resource demanding, have a promising future on the calculation of effective LAI values of large areas in a very short time span. Similarly, the forestry PCD obtained by TLS has the best performance among other PCD at both DBH and TH estimation

ÖgeEvaluation of seismoturbidite generation in various tectonic settings: Implications for assessing short-term and long-term seismic cycles(Graduate School, 2022-12-16) Yakupoğlu, Nurettin ; Uçarkuş, Gülsen ; 505162308 ; Geological EngineeringIn subaqueous paleoseismology, sediment-gravity flow deposits are used as a tool for determination of past earthquakes in marine basins. Decade long investigations of various regions provided important indicators on how to use turbidites in paleoseismology. Earthquake-triggered turbidite deposits (seismoturbidites) are mainly distinguished by their textural, physical, sedimentological and geochemical aspects from the classical turbidites are not classified properly. In this study, variable methods are used to accurately determine the stratigraphic nuances of the sub-units of turbidites using a multi-proxy approach. This approach also helped to construct the depositional model of turbidite generation in various tectonic settings. Turbidites are composed of a coarse basal part that results from the turbulent currents which then overlain by laminar current deposits. Head and body of the turbidity currents carry the coarse sediments followed by turbidity tail flows. These slow-moving currents form a suspension cloud that leads the formation of a homogeneous mud. These homogenous cap deposits are named as homogenites. During the deposition of seismoturbidites, the boundary between homogenites and overlying background sediments become ambiguous. Identification of this boundary is crucial in order to establish accurate age-depth models in the service of paleoseismological usage. Therefore, this thesis tested the demarcation of these boundary with different techniques in different sedimentary settings. This thesis project evaluates three different depositional environments and tectonic settings in terms of seismoturbidite generation. Detailed synthesis of multi-proxies allows differentiating depositional differences of turbidite and homogenite units between confined basin, oceanic margins and lacustrine environments. Multi-proxy approach comprises physical, geochemical and dating methods. Grain size analyses, computed tomography, x-ray radiography, gamma density, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic folation and lineation values are used as physical precursers to determine the turbidite-homogenite units and their lower and upper boundaries within the core stratigraphy. Geochemical precursers are total organic carbon analyses, x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction analyses. These methods have been conducted to show climatic-oceaongraphic periods of the core stratigraphy as well as a strong indicator for demarcation of turbidite-homogenite units. Dating of the sediment cores comprise radiocarbon and radionuclide analyses. All dating outcome is computed in age-depth models for each core to produce robust chronostratigraphy by using "clam" script. Turbidite-homogenite units are neglected during the age-depth model construction since they display instantaneous deposits. Kumburgaz basin, as a confined basin, is located along the North Anatolian Fault in Sea of Marmara, is investigated by a giant piston core covering the last 15 kyrs long sedimentary record. Seventy turbidite-homogenite units were identified in this core by their sedimentological, elemental, magnetic parameters to show the difference between occurrence rates and thicknesses over marine and lacustrine phases of the Sea of Marmara. Within the marine phase, two Holocene sapropelic layers have been detected. Variation of turbidite occurrence is 174 yrs, 114 yrs, 287 yrs and 235 yrs in non-sapropelic marine units, upper sapropel, lower sapropel and lacustrine unit respectively. Turbidite homogenite units are distinguished from the core stratigraphy by using magnetic foliation and elemental distributions showing abrupt drop at the boundary between homogenites and overlying background sediments. Moreover, thesis focuses on Çınarcık and Central basins of Sea of Marmara as well in order to show the depositional differences between sedimentary basins. Turbidite occurrence rates compared between three basins varies within the last six kyrs sedimentary record. Within the same period of time occurrence rates are different in each basins since it is related with the sediment input of the basins, their submarine canyon activity and the location of the coring as well. An oceanic margin, Hikurangi trough is located at the east of Northern Island in New Zealand. Four sediment cores were recovered from different locations to test the detrital differentiation and depositional variations. Number of detected turbidites are not constant between the studied cores even though the cores cover the same amount of time. Physical characteristics and extensive geochemical proxies of the sediments reveal the transition between homogenites and overlying hemipelagites. Demarcation is determined by the combination of elemental and mineralogical distribution of sediments. In homogenites, generally detrital plagioclase and K-feldspar is enriched however in hemipelagic sediment organic calcite is the dominant mineral which is supported by high Ca and Sr count levels. Lake Hazar is located along the East Anatolian Fault at in eastern Turkey. Eleven gravity cores were recovered from various parts of the lake providing a great laboratory to evaluate different depositional processes. The 6 kyrs long sedimentary record is correlated with historical earthquake catalogues showing accurate correlation between turbidites and the last 1500 yrs of large earthquake activity. The sedimentary traces of the most recent 2020 Sivrice and 1971 Bingöl earthquakes were recorded as several turbidite units within the lake basin. Because of the dense coverage of gravity cores it was possible to differentiate four depositional facies based on our analysis. Accordingly, massif, graded, laminated and fluctuated turbidites were detected that represent various depositional conditions. Distribution of facies is done by extensive grain size analyses of the sediments. Mean grain size, sorting, skewness formulations and their cluster distributions showed the boundary between turbidite and overlying lacustrine sediments as well as their depositional patterns. Consequently, this thesis discusses the depositional parameters that control the turbidite-homogenite generation by investigating three different sedimentary environments a confined basin, Sea of Marmara, a lacustrine environment, lake Hazar and an oceanic margin, Hikurangi trough. An important conclusion shows that earthquake triggered turbidites, their occurrence rate and turbidite thicknesses differ based on the detrital component of the catchment area, sediment budget, climatic factors and morphological variations. Seismoturbidites are currently the only tool to evaluate earthquake recurrence on submarine fault systems. However, since these deposits are an indirect precursor of earthquake faulting, they need to be discussed carefully when assessing earthquake recurrence of a certain fault system. Seismoturbidites can be a robust tool if; a) a reliable age-depth model can be constructed, b) multiple cores can be recovered strategically location-wise, c) the time period spans max 6 kyrs to avoid the climatic and oceaongraphic effects of turbidite deposition.

ÖgeExamination of the links between communication and environment in urban areas and their change in the digital age(Institute of Science and Technology, 2020) Aşar, Nergis ; Kaya Erdem, Meltem ; 637724 ; Department of Landscape ArchitecturePeople's relationship with their surrounding consist of different links between various elements that inhabits in these environments, and communication is one of the most important action that creates harmony between them. From small communities to crowded urban living, in every scale communication plays an important role. Yet complex organized living systems such as urban environments, increase the amount of communication patterns that people encounter everyday which directly affects human environment interaction. The improvements in technology, has transformed the communication patterns with in the urban content. Even though this transformation is constant, the rapid change in technology especially with mobile device, has accelerated it and allowed new digital realities co-habit with the physical reality. Also digital realities which overcome the restrictions of distance and expand the borders of time and place, re-shape the web of relations that focuses on human and environment relations. Human environment interaction examines relationship patterns of people with their environment. Environment is a dense term that includes other living things, relations, behaviour and culture as cumulation of these relations and behaviours. Furthermore, it defines and transforms the conceptualization of space. The necessity of human environment interaction is directly in relation with the basic needs of human and one of the most important method to achieve this interaction is communication. Communication is an subtle act that can occur in different forms and can be perceived by different senses.

ÖgeHigh-resolution gravimetric geoid modeling in the era of satellite and airborne gravimetry(Graduate School, 2022-10-06) Işık, Mustafa Serkan ; Erol, Bihter ; 501162607 ; Geomatics EngineeringWith the advances in positioning and inertial navigation systems, the accuracy obtained from the airborne gravimetry technique has reached very important levels that aid high-resolution gravity field modeling. The data obtained from the airborne gravimetry is of great importance in complementing the deficiencies of terrestrial data in mountainous areas and land-sea transitions in coastal areas where modeling the geoid are most troublesome. In this thesis, high-resolution regional gravimetric geoid modeling was investigated in light of the recent advancements in the field of gravimetry, more specifically satellite and airborne gravimetry. With recently developed GOCE-based global geopotential models and advanced stochastic techniques to model the regional gravity field as a solution of the geodetic boundary value problem, it is possible to achieve a high-resolution geoid model which can alter the traditional vertical reference system realization. In this regard, four studies are carried out in two test regions: Colorado, the USA, and Turkey. The first study focused on the contribution of airborne gravity measurements to gravimetric geoid modeling in a high topography, Colorado, USA, via the least squares modification of Stokes (LSMSA) and Hotine (LSMHA) integrals with additive corrections techniques. The study included filtering the high-frequency airborne gravimeter data with minimum loss of signal and downward continuing it to the Earth's surface by Least Squares Collocation method with a planar logarithmic covariance model. The reduced data was optimally combined with the satellite data from the global geopotential model and terrestrial gravity data to calculate a high-accuracy gravimetric geoid model. In this combination, the error variance of each data set was taken into account to stochastically determine the variance of input gravity anomaly/disturbance data set for Stokes and Hotine integrals. To clarify the importance of airborne gravity data to the study, three gravity data sets were created: terrestrial-only, airborne-only, and combined. The computed gravimetric geoid models were tested with highly accurate GPS/leveling benchmarks collected for the validation of models along a profile passing through the rough topography of the Colorado mountains. The results indicated the contribution of airborne gravity data over the mountainous regions, clearly. In conclusion, we obtained two gravimetric geoid models calculated using combined data set via LSMSA and LSMHA methodologies whose absolute accuracies are 2.69 cm and 2.87 cm, respectively. In the rest of the thesis, we focused on improving the accuracy of the gravimetric geoid model in Turkey. The first study that concerns the geoid model of Turkey dealt with the downscaling of low-resolution gravity anomaly data set, which originally has ~9 km resolution, to a spatial resolution of ~2 km. This task was achieved via the proper modeling of the topographic attraction on gravity using planar and spherical approaches for Bouguer gravity anomalies. While the planar approach was implemented for the computation of complete Bouguer gravity anomalies using classical terrain correction based on the mass-prism technique, the spherical approach was applied using a global model for the topographic attraction that is SRTM2Gravity. Based on these two approaches, the low-resolution complete Bouguer anomalies were enriched to higher-resolution data set, and consequently, surface gravity anomalies were calculated from planar and spherical complete Bouguer anomalies. Three gravimetric geoid models were calculated via the LSMSA technique, a low-resolution reference geoid with a planar approach, and two high-resolution geoids via planar and spherical approaches. Based on the accuracy assessment at 100 homogeneously distributed GPS/leveling benchmarks, the accuracy of the best-performing geoid was found as 8.6 cm using spherical approximation. The performance of gravimetric geoid models using the down-scaled surface gravity anomalies was significantly better compared to the low-resolution solution, the spherical approach being slightly better than the planar one. Hence, the success of the down-scaling was proven in terms of the accuracy achieved by the high-resolution gravimetric geoid models.

ÖgeImproving the performance of remote sensing-based water budget components across mid- and small- scale basins(Graduate School, 2022-07-19) Kayan, Gökhan ; Erten, Esra ; Türker, Umut ; 501152601 ; Geomatics EngineeringIn the last few decades, many global basins have been threatened by rapid urban growth and global warming, resulting in changes in their climate regime. Climate change has increased the incidence of extreme weather events, uncertain water availability, water scarcity, and water pollution. Remote sensing (RS) has emerged as a powerful technique that provides estimations with high spatiotemporal resolution and broad spatial coverage. In recent years, the efficacy of RS products for water budget (WB) analysis has been widely tested and implemented in global and regional basins. Although RS products provide high temporal and spatial resolution images with a near-global coverage, uncertainty is still a significant problem. The main goal of this study is to utilize two different approaches to minimize the uncertainty of the products and to improve RS-based WB estimations in mid- and small- scale basins. The first approach aims to improve the efficacy of water WB estimations from various hydrological data products in the Sakarya basin by; (1) Evaluating the uncertainties of hydrological data products, (2) Merging four precipitation (P) and six evapotranspiration (ET) products using the error variances, and (3) Employing the Constrained Kalman Filter (CKF) method to distribute residual errors (r) among WB components based on their relative uncertainties. The results showed that applying bias correction before the merging process improved estimations of P products with decreasing root mean square error (RMSE), except PERSIANN. VIC and bias-corrected CMORPH products outperformed other ET and bias-corrected P products, respectively, in terms of mean merging weights. The terrestrial water storage change (ΔS) is the primary reason for non-closure errors. This is mainly caused by the two facts. First, the Sakarya basin is a relatively small basin that GRACE can not simply resolve. Second, while P, ET, and Q mostly describe the surface water dynamics, ΔS includes both the surface water and ground water. It is well known that surface water and ground water have completely different dynamic behaviors. The change in surface water is much faster than the change in groundwater. The CKF results were insensitive to variations in uncertainties of runoff (Q). P derived from the CKF was the best output, with the highest correlation coefficient (CC) and the smallest root mean square deviation (RMSD). In the second approach, the annual r in the WB equation arising from the uncertainties of the RS products was minimized by applying fuzzy correction coefficients to each WB component. For analysis, three different fuzzy linear regression (FLR) models with fourteen different sub-models were used in the two basins having different spatial characteristics, namely Sakarya and Cyprus basins. The performance of sub-models is better in the Sakarya basin than that in the Cyprus basin, which has a higher leakage error due to across ocean/land boundary. Moreover, the Cyprus basin is too small for some low-resolution RS-based products to resolve. The Zeng and Hojati sub-models outperformed Tanaka sub-models in the Sakarya basin, whereas Zeng Case-I, Zeng Case-II, and Hojati (degree of fitting index (h) =0.9) sub-models showed the best performance in the Cyprus basin. The best fuzzy sub-models reduced the error up to 68% and 52% in terms of mean absolute error compared to non-fuzzy model in the Sakarya and Cyprus basins, respectively. Further evaluations showed that the best sub-model P well captured the temporal patterns of gauge observations in both basins. Moreover, they have the best consistency with gauge observations in terms of RMSE, Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE), and percent bias (PBIAS) in the both basins. The results proved that the second approach will provide valuable insights into WB analysis in ungauged basins by incorporating the fuzzy logic approach into hydrological RS products. In general, the FLR and CKF derived P, ET, and Q showed similar seasonal variation with peak and bottom values appeared in nearly the same years. In terms of CC, RMSE, and bias, fuzzy outputs show closest agreement with CKF outputs for Q, with slightly less agreement for P and ET, and much less agreement for ΔS. It can be concluded that the majority of the errors in the second approach are caused by fuzzy ΔS.

ÖgeInventory of masswasting and sediment transport features on the Ligurian margin(Graduate School, 2022-06-28) Ahmadov, Rashid ; Eriş, Kürşad Kadir ; Spieb, Volkhard ; 505181325 ; Geological EngineeringThe Ligurian margin (NW-Mediterranean Sea) is a seismically and tectonically active margin, and lots of mass wasting processes and submarine landslides are known on the deeper slope. Based on multichannel seismic reflection data from the expedition of M73/1, LIMA-LAMO (Ligurian Margin Landslide Measurements & Observatory) 2007, this study attempts to have a better idea of the underground structure of the deepwater area of the Ligurian Margin, including the deeper slope (1500-2000 m water depth) west of the Var Canyon with several scars, landslide, and the Var Canyon zone with its channels, terraces, and flanks in down to roughly 2500 m water depth. The seismic-stratigraphic analysis and facies description of the processed 17 seismic lines allowed us to understand the connection between the deposits and deeper areas and the original deposits where the failure masses were coming from. There has been no study before this thesis about the collected deepwater survey data from the M73/1 2007 expedition. In brief, these seismic profiles can be used for future scientific works, and there is no need to repeat processing. It is well known that sea-level fluctuations have deeply influenced the stratigraphy of the region. However, at present, this study is not able to assign a geologic age to the deposition of sequences in relation to sea-level changes. The narrow continental shelf and steep gradients have minimized the effect of sea-level change. A more precise, extensive, and dense survey is needed to evaluate the event in the region.
